INTRODUCTION
The new community owned and managed camp site at the
beautiful WestBay area of the
The camp site has been set up
on the 300 acre Ngeny’in (=”Salt-lick”) Conservancy, and 100% of the income
reverts to the 105 members of the local community who have participated in the
enterprise.
DESCRIPTION
OF THE
The campsite consists of an approximately
20-acre acre within the 300-acre fenced Conservancy which has been set aside
for camping. The camping area consists of an acacia woodland, and a large
grassy area stretching to the
This part of the Lake is
ideal for hiking and exploration as one can walk for miles either North, South
or inland to the cliffs, almost completely unimpeded by fences.
There are few facilities in
the camp site other than a small sanitation block consisting of a long drop WC
and a shower but – depending on the reasons for your visit - this may largely
be compensated for by the wilderness location and the possibilities for
reaching into a local community.
Firewood is readily available
and a “runner” is also on hand to shop at the village for necessities. The cost
of sending a runner to the village for supplies is about 50 ksh.
HOW
TO REACH WEST BAY
The camp site is relatively easy to see on the map but
is a little tricky to find without assistance. However those wishing to camp
can easily stop at the collection of shops opposite the Robert’s Camp and Lake
Baringo Club entrances and ask at The Lake Baringo Boats
and Excursions office and someone will assist with directions.
It is also possible to
combine a boat trip with accessing the campsite. This can be a good idea if you
have arrived by public transport. Again, the Lake Baringo Boats and Excursions
office will be glad to help.
Alternatively ring Moses
Kandie when you arrive in town; he is at 0722 420699
For those who wish to try and
get there on their own, follow these brief directions:
Go straight down to village
from the County Council barrier and turn left at the T-Junction, folowing signs
to Island Camp Jetty. At Island Camp Jetty gate, swing left. After a few
hundred metres you will see the Kampi ya
CONTACTS
and BOOKINGS
It is not strictly necessary
to book for camping, but it does make things easier for the staff if they know
who is coming. As the area is a Community Conservancy, the management like to
arrange matters such as staffing and grazing access according to how many
visitors are arriving.
Here are the contacts for the
person in charge, Moses Kandie.
Moses is also a member of LABGAS (Lake Baringo Bird
Guides Association) and will be pleased to arrange for some guided walks in the
area if you wish.
