The Lake Bogoria National Reserve covers 107 km sq and is easily reached from either Nakuru or Lake Baringo. The reserve is most famous for its flamingo population, its strange and quite stunning scenery and the presence if the rare Greater Kudu. It is better to visit the Lake either in the early morning or late evening, as it is fiercely hot at midday and so staying in the area is probably the best option.

The Lake Bogoria Reserve is run by Baringo County Council in tandem with the KWS. Payment is made to enter the reserve at the main gate at Loboi which is accessed by turning left a few kms from Marigat (heading south.) Lake Bogoria can also be accessed by an overland route starting from Mogotio near Equator. The route takes you through the Mogotio sisal plantations and is interesting, but fairly rough. Once there, there is an entry fee per person, and you will have to pay a vehicle fee as well. If you wish to camp within the Reserve, which is in our view the best way to appreciate the area, you may pay a camping charge at the gate. Admission charges are given here.

Stay at the High Altitude Training Centre, Iten and learn from the champions. Kenya's success on the running track is well known. Iten, perched at 8000 feet on the escarpment of the western side of the Rift Valley is more than anywhere else associated with these phenomenal runners. That extra 1.6% of speed which training at high altitude can provide is the key to the existence of this place, dubbed by the owners "The University of Champions."

Lorna Kiplagat, World Champion marathon runner and her husband Peter have built a training camp to allow athletes from all over the world come and benefit from this advantage. The many local runners living in the area, some of them world champions and Olympic medallists, also use the facilities.

Taidy's Hotel and Restaurant, Eldama Ravine is a comfortable and rather chic hotel with a nice, outdoor bar and restaurant with some tempting dishes. With branches in Nakuru, Kericho and Eldama this is a successfully expanding chain and is certainly at the moment the tourist's best option for food and accommodation for miles around.

From Nyahururu to Lake Baringo along “the Pyramid Road” Time: 2.5 hours
A saloon car in dry weather, otherwise a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
You can do this journey in less time than it would take to follow the tarmac route to Solai, Nakuru and then North again and it is a really spectacular drive. Follow the instructions carefully – the maps do not quite coincide with the reality!
