Kudu
Campsite and Bandas
Maji
Moto Gate,
INTRODUCTION
Kudu Campsite and Bandas is a small locally owned business
situated just outside the Maji Moto Gate to the West of Lake Bogoria National
Reserve. It is part of a larger community enterprise concerned with
strengthening the local
economy,
whose activities range from bee keeping to craft manufacture to the provision
of accommodation and trail guides for visiting tourists.
It consists of a fenced area of about two acres with a camping area for which tents are available for hire, a number of 2 and 3 bedroom bandas and a small open eating area. You can come self catering and cook for yourself or you can avail of the restaurant which is not expensive.
While by no means luxurious, Kudu is a useful stopping point for those passing through the Reserve and is in fact the only low budget accommodation (other than camping) in or close to the Reserve available to visitors. Jeremiah Kiprotich is a charming host and will fall over himself to make you as comfortable as possible. If you plan to stay, it is a good idea to book and he will make sure he is adequately stocked with food and drinks.

WHAT
TO DO WHILE YOU ARE THERE
Maji
Moto is a typical village of these arid parts. It does however enjoy the
benefit of a rocky stream where one can happily bathe alongside the local
population in the cool of the early morning or evening. Because there is water
there are some interesting walks through nicely irrigated fields nearby. The
fertility of the watered area is quite astonishing. There are also good acacia
woodlands nearby.
Walking to Lake Bogoria Hot Springs from here is highly recommended. It is about 5 km but all downhill and the views are magnificent.
If you are interested in the flora and fauna of the area, Jeremiah will arrange a trail guide for you who can point out many fascinating details which might otherwise compeletely escape you.
If you wish to camp in the Reserve itself, a good plan is to make Kudu Campsite your start point. You can hire tents, bedding and if necessary transport from Kudu and make your journey into the Reserve from here.
