Fig Tree and Acacia Campsites

Lake Bogoria National Reserve

Acacia Campsite

Camping within Lake Bogoria National Park is without doubt one of the best ways to appreciate the magnificent scenery and wildlife which the Reserve has to offer. There are no tents on either site you so you should arrive completely self sufficient.

Acacia campsite is a flat grassy area shaded by acacia trees about 10 or 15 minutes beyond the Hot Springs on the road to Emsos gate. This means that from the main gate at Loboi by car the journey will take about 35 minutes. It is well signposted.

There is abundant firewood and also, importantly, a delightful source of fresh and hot water. This can be found near where the road veers into the campsite and consists of a shallow pool with a low stone wall which acts as a small dam. The water may safely be bathed in or collected in buckets or even plastic bags, which when strung from a tree, make excellent showers.

The best thing about camping in Acacia Campsite is your proximity to the flamingoes which spend the night on the lake shore beside the camp. You may also walk from the campsite in either direction (although northwards is easiest) in the cooler hours and enjoy the most magnificent sights, particularly at sunrise and sunset.

Tents are available to hire from Kudu Campsite at the Maji Moto Gate or from Archer Outpost or The Tamarind Garden in Kampi ya Samaki.

There is no need to book for camping. Simply present yourself at any of the gates to the Reserve.

Fig Tree Campsite

Fig Tree campsite provides a completely different experience to Acacia in that it is, as its name suggests, set in one of the few remaining Fig tree forests in the country.

It is a beautiful setting but suffers somewhat from the presence of baboons who may cause some annoyance at mealtimes.

Fig Tree Camp is at the end of a rough track about 10 minutes further on along the Emsos Road than Acacia Camp and so is at least 45 minutes drive from the main Loboi gate. There is a signpost and so it is not difficult to find. Keep the car windows closed while driving along the rough track as there are Horse Flies on this particular stretch.

There will be plenty of firewood available at Fig Tree campsite but you should bring plenty of drinking water with you.

One fascinating expedition is to “climb” the stream which comes down from the mountainside deep within the Fig Tree Forest. The stream emerges in a grassy outcrop about 50 metres further along than the campsite. Leave your shoes behind you and scrabble up the stony waterway, keeping your camera dry for the quite spectacular scenes ahead; fantastic root systems, rare birds and giant spider webs await the intrepid explorer, as well as the delight of immersing yourself in the bubbling pools further up the hillside.

Tents are available to hire from Kudu Campsite at the Maji Moto Gate or from Archer Outpost or The Tamarind Garden in Kampi ya Samaki.
